Summer Session Lecturer : Ivan Seal

Culture for me regards the sharing of attitudes, values and activities that identify people or things into a group, organization or institution. An agreement between specific parties or a consensus decides often for us what is considered culture.

Then there are subcultures. Existing for at least a period outside of what is known as mainstream or “culture”, subcultures formulate there own styles and idealologies against or perverting what has already been decided i.e. the consensus. They often also play with their context to create new uses or interpretations with what they have around them. Just as Duchamp picked up a piece of furniture and said “ its art “ punk stuck a safety pin through its nose and said “this is fashion”.

This element of forming ones own language to be identified by and improvising with what one has to create something is partly what I find interesting about this years theme for PICTURE BERLIN. I find the activities of reattribution and “do it yourself” is a perfect area to begin this year's program. How does an artist’s work function or change when made somewhere else? How could the artists improvise with the situation to benefit and open new areas in there practice?

Ivan will be hosting lectures and discussions the first week of PICTURE BERLIN.
